Campus Update: September 24, 2020

It's great news that cases of COVID-19 and hospitalizations, in general, are falling in North Carolina, and it's encouraging to see that some universities are managing to educate students while keeping outbreaks at a minimum (bravo Duke!). And as we learn more each day about this disease, it's clear that we need to remain vigilant and continue to "wash, wear, and wait six feet apart" until an effective vaccine becomes widely available. And as we head into flu season, it seems wise if we continue to meet mainly online, with the exception of outdoor meetings with social distancing and the use of masks and hand sanitizer. We know how hard it is to remain mostly online and at a distance, but with the advent of flu season, this seems like the wisest action to take given the nature of most of our programs.

Outdoor Space Soon Available for ERUUF Groups: At their August meeting, the ERUUF Board gave the Lead Minister and Coordinating Team the task of creating and implementing safe and effective phased reopening guidelines for our fellowship and campus. At this time ERUUF is in phase two, which allows for ERUUF Groups to use outdoor space according to specific rules of use. Space Request

Sunday Services Continue via Livestream: In related news, beginning Sunday, September 6, though our members will continue to access Sunday morning services through the link on ERUUF’s homepage, we will begin to produce Sunday morning service in the Sanctuary. In accord with the phase two guidelines, only the worship leaders, musicians, and tech team will be present in the Sanctuary (limited to 10 people).

Updates from the Fellowship

  • Based on the continued spread of the coronavirus, we expect that worship will continue to be “online only” well into the fall and possibly beyond. Thanks to a generous grant from the Eno River Foundation, webcast recording equipment has been installed in the ERUUF Sanctuary. Staff are eagerly learning the new system so that even though you can’t come to ERUUF, soon we’ll be able to “bring ERUUF to you!” We’re very grateful to the Foundation for this generous gift which will make it possible to continue to share Sunday morning from the Sanctuary long after the pandemic is just a story we tell in the future.
  • We’re also planning for church school and adult programs to be “online only” this fall. We’re ready to pivot back to “in person” as soon as it’s safe to do so. But while it’s not safe we’re checking in with our members to find out what they need and we’ll do our best to respond with online groups and classes.

Date Change for Annual Meeting
At the April Board meeting, ERUUF’s Board set the date for the Annual Meeting on June 28, 2020. This is much later than we usually hold the meeting. The Board believes this will give Stewardship and Annual Pledge Team leaders the time we need to complete the Annual Pledge Campaign, and for the Coordinating Team and Board to create a budget for the coming year based on realistic financial resources. If you haven’t yet made your pledge of support for 2020-21, it would help immensely if you would do that online now.

 ERUUF Helping ERUUFians

Thank you to everyone who has sent contributions to the Ministers Discretionary Fund. Some have sent their stimulus checks and others have contributed $10, and each represents a genuine sacrifice.  Thanks to everyone’s love and support, together we’ve helped fellow members close the gap on essentials such as rent and mortgage, food, transportation, and utilities. Many are still waiting after six or more weeks to hear back from the unemployment office, or about their SBA loans. Those pictures of long lines of very nice middle-class cars in line at food pantries?  That’s us, middle America, one paycheck, one health crisis away from losing it all. But in this congregation, we won’t let each other go hungry or sit in the dark with the lights turned off. Thank you also to everyone who has contributed to ERUUF itself by pledge completion, or extra contribution. You inspire me, ERUUF…you really do.
